ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is defined as a neurodevelopment disorder with symptoms that include impulsivity, inattention, hyperactivity and a multitude of others. It is commonly associated with children but adults can have ADHD too! ADHD is genetic in most cases, so if one person in a family has ADHD there is a great chance that someone else does as well.
It is one of the most common misunderstood conditions in the world. When most people think ADHD they think someone who can't sit still or someone who has trouble paying attention. What the world must understand is that the ADHD mind is much more complex.
First lest address the fact that the name ADHD is very misnamed. People with ADHD in fact do not have any "Deficit" of attention they just have trouble regulating that attention.
ADHD is classified under three types:
Inattentive
Hyperactivity
Combined
Inattentive Types are the type to get distracted easily, are very disorganized, constantly loose items and have trouble learning.
Hyperactivity Types have a constant need for movement. They feel the need to fidget or squirm.
Combined Types make up the majority of those with ADHD and demonstrate characteristics of both previous types.
Symptoms
fidgeting
inattention
agression
anxiety
depression
short attention span
issues with memory
issues with learning
impulsiveness
mood swings
Treatment
Although there are medications that treat ADHD, a lot of people choose to make peace with their ADHD mind and work with it instead of against it. Above all, the long term side effects of the medication.
Some of the medications include can Ritalin, Adderall, and a lot of others to help with their ADHD. There have been a lot of positive aspects of medication when it comes to getting someone focused but people often feel that the medication makes them feel like a part of them is "gone".
To avoid medication, people with ADHD will choose to go to therapy as a means for working with their ADHD. Therapy in any aspect can make someone more conscious of themselves and gain more control of their actions to ultimately work in their benefit.
Benefits
YES, there are benefits to having ADHD! People with ADHD experience these benefits daily and sometimes don't even know it. Since the ADHD brain moves so fast, they have the ability to think of ideas before others might not have even came close to.
Imagine it like being The Flash in an easter egg hunt. The Flash not only will find every egg much faster than a regular person, but might find something else because he has the ability to cover so much ground so much faster!
ADHD'ers also work very well under pressure! They have the ability to excel in fast pace environments when they adapt. I've heard of people with ADHD doing extremely well in things such as MMA or fast paced video games such as Call of Duty.
Lastly, HYPER FOCUS! Everyone has the ability to hyper focus, but people with ADHD take it to an entirely new level. When things are interesting, people with ADHD have the ability to focus on that interesting thing like no other. The entire world around them melts and they become completely engulfed in that particular activity!
What to do if you think you have ADHD?
The most important thing is to do your research because the symptoms of ADHD can be confused with other things. If you feel there is a strong possibility that you have ADHD I strongly encourage you to seek a proper diagnosis. The diagnosis is the most important part because it gives you a plan to operate your life by now. Before you were going through life like a neurotypical person and you were not and thats OK! Love yourself. You were great before but now you'll be even better!
